Es ist das Ende einer Ära: Die NBA tauscht nach 38 Jahren ihren offiziellen Spielball aus und wechselt von Hersteller Spalding zurück zu Wilson.

Ab der Saison 2021/22 wird wieder ein Ball der Firma verwendet, die schon von der Gründung der Liga im Jahr 1946 bis 1983 Ausrüster war. Im kommenden Jahr beginnt die 75. NBA-Saison.

"Die Partnerschaft mit Wilson bringt uns bei den Planungen für die Zukunft zu unseren Wurzeln zurück", sagte Salvatore LaRocca, NBA-Präsident für weltweiter Partnerschaften. Neben der NBA wird auch in der Nachwuchsliga NBA G League ab 2021 mit Wilson-Bällen gespielt, die Frauen-Profiliga WNBA zieht 2022 nach.

Das US-Unternehmen Wilson, das einen mehrjährigen Vertrag mit der NBA abschloss, wird bei der Produktion die gleichen Materialien wie Spalding verwenden, der Ball wird weiter in acht Paneele unterteilt sein.

Die NBA will mit ihren Profis bei der Entwicklung helfen. Wilson stellt auch den Spielball in der US-Football-Profiliga NFL.
